IGP officially recognized in South Australia – An important milestone for the IGP community across Australia

A significant day for IGP dog sport: The South Australian government has now explicitly excluded IGP from the definition of "aggressive or attack dogs." This represents a crucial change in the law recognizing that IGP dogs are not aggressive or attack dogs – and this step has a signal effect for the entire sport in Australia.

A success for education and solidarity

This decision is the result of many months of dedicated work, sound information, and constructive dialogue with politicians. Special thanks go to Connie Bonaros, who, as a strong ally of the IGP community, fought for justice and fairness. She ensured that the voices of owners, breeders, and athletes were heard.

Ensure, instead of generalizing

Another crucial element of this legislative change is the recording of a dog's training history if it is involved in a biting incident. This means that an animal's behavior must now be considered based on information and evidence, rather than on assumptions. Connie Bonaros aptly pointed out that there is no evidence of an increased risk in IGP dogs—now there is the tool to make informed and accountable decisions.

A balanced compromise for safety and animal sports

This new regulation therefore sets an important standard for dealing with difficult issues related to dogs. On the one hand, it protects public safety by examining individual cases instead of placing entire breeds or sports under general suspicion. On the other hand, it supports the lively, performance-oriented, and responsible nature of IGP sport – as well as the well-being of dogs and owners.

A milestone for IGP sport

The decision has a signal effect for Australia far beyond South Australia. It strengthens the reputation of this traditional sport, supports the training and breeding of high-performance, balanced dogs—and opens up new perspectives for the IGP sport in the future.

A heartfelt thank you

To all those who fought for this change, raised their voices, and showed unity, we say: THANK YOU! This result is the merit of a united community that stood up for the good in sport, for justice, and for the welfare of dogs and their owners.
